Advanced Educational Technology (EDTC 5315)
This website serves as my Learning & Development Journal for EDTC 5315: Advanced Educational Technology, Spring 2025. I will document my reflections, insights, and progress as I explore key concepts, readings, and projects in the course. This public journal provides a space to track my learning journey while engaging with the broader discussions in educational technology.
I currently reside in Japan, where the Japan Educational Exchanges and Services (JEES) administers the Japanese-Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) biannually during winter and summer. This standardized examination evaluates and certifies non-native speakers' Japanese language proficiency across five levels: N1 (high-school equivalent) through N5 (beginner).
While working in Tokyo, I achieved the N2 certification level. However, since relocating to Okinawa and transitioning to a role where I primarily communicate in English, my Japanese language abilities have significantly declined. To maintain and improve my language skills, I have committed to taking the N3 intermediate examination this July.
For Educational Technology 5315: Advanced Educational Technology, I propose developing a student-centered, multimedia e-learning assessment module focused specifically on Japanese vocabulary and grammar at the JLPT N3 level. My e-learning module will be designed as a practice examination environment that mirrors the format and difficulty of the official N3 test.
The module will primarily function as an assessment tool rather than instructional content. It assumes users have already studied N3-level material independently and are seeking to evaluate their readiness for the official examination. The module will feature:
Multiple-choice questions modeled after actual JLPT N3 test items
Comprehensive assessment of grammar structures and vocabulary specific to the N3 level
Immediate feedback on question responses with brief explanations
Performance tracking to identify knowledge gaps requiring additional study
While the JLPT also assesses reading and listening comprehension, I will concentrate exclusively on grammar and vocabulary—my particular areas of weakness—to maintain a focused assessment approach.
After careful consideration, I have selected Adobe Captivate as the development platform for this e-learning module for the following reasons:
It has significant visibility within the instructional design profession, making proficiency with this tool valuable for my professional development
It offers a relatively affordable subscription model should I choose to continue using it beyond this course
Based on preliminary research, it is easier to learn than alternatives like Articulate360
Texas State University students have access to comprehensive Adobe Captivate training modules through LinkedIn Learning
Through this project, I aim to:
Develop a comprehensive, interactive e-learning assessment module simulating the JLPT N3 grammar and vocabulary sections
Demonstrate mastery of Adobe Captivate's multimedia capabilities and assessment design features
Apply effective educational technology principles to language proficiency evaluation
Create a sustainable practice test resource that supports my ongoing Japanese language development
This project will allow me to simultaneously meet the course requirements while developing a practical tool that addresses my personal educational needs.
